- What is the story behind the wall?
During the election for president, Donald Trump said he would build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Now as he has become president, he still believes this and has said,
“We need the Wall for the safety and security of our country. We need the Wall to help stop the massive inflow of drugs from Mexico, now rated the number one most dangerous country in the world. If there is no Wall, there is no Deal!”
Now he takes action, and use the shutdown to pay for the wall.
- Why is it so important?
Trump believes the wall is so important because it can stop the inflow of drugs from Mexico, and also that Mexico is a dangerous country, so if people from Mexico comes to the USA he think they can do bad things.
- What is a government shutdown? Is this the first time this happens?
The government shutdown is a shutdown where federal people doesn’t get payed. It occurs when the president or the congress propose something to fund, in this case the wall. This has happened before with the Ronald Reagan administration, where there were eight shutdowns, the George. W. H. Bush administration where it happened a weekend, and a 16-day shutdown during the Barack Obama administration.
- Are there any similarities to the building a wall along the Mexican border and Brexit?
The similarities between the Mexican border and Brexit is that the UK doesn’t want immigration from European countries, and therefore by exiting EU, they can choose not to take care of immigrants. The Mexican border is used the same way, by making it impossible for immigrants from Mexico to come across.
- Who are affected by this shutdown?
Ordinary people living in the USA are affected by this shutdown. Many people are working and not making any money, because their jobs matter so much that they have to do them, like for example firefighters. Because they’re not making any money, they have more bills and other things to pay that they can’t afford. Many people who doesn’t have jobs like this report in sick because there is no use working.
- What does the “Buck stops with me” mean.
“the buck stops here” means that you have to take responsibility for what you have done instead of blaming someone else.
